Across the country & Worldwide Recognized Grooming Your Dog Schools

Pet groomers learn to wash, trim, and style animals' coats.

Almost half of all pet owners lavish special care on their animals by taking them to a groomer. Becoming a certified pet groomer is a rewarding career if you enjoy working with animals and have a stylist's artistic flair. As the population of owners and their pets continues to grow, you're sure to have business. To become a trained and certified pet groomer that clients flock to, look for a nationally or internationally certified training school.

Florida Institute of Animal Arts

The Florida Institute of Animal Arts, is a certified member of the National Dog Groomers Association of America, the National Cat Groomers Institute of America, and of International Professional Groomers, among several others. In addition to standards of grooming, the school also emphasizes shop operations and management for students who want to operate their own business. Programs range from a basic 13-week program to the Professional Styling program, which takes at least 38 weeks full-time.

American Grooming Services

California's American Grooming Services Academy is a member of the International Professional Groomers Society, and offers a range of programs whether you want to become a professional dog bather, a stylist trained in American Kennel Club standard grooming techniques for each breed, or a pet salon manager or operator. The dog groomer program takes only 2 weeks of full-time instruction, while the professional advanced stylist program takes 12 weeks full-time.

Cornerstone Dog Grooming Academy

This dogs-only academy in Ohio is recognized by the International Professional Groomers society. Headed by Sherri L. Glass, this small grooming school offers hands-on training through actual clients at her own Groomer's Corner salon. They also prepare to become groomers in shops, veterinary offices, kennels, or for breeders or other businesses offering grooming services. Class size is limited and programs are flexible, designed to work with the student's own pace and learning style.

LaBest Academy of Animal Arts

Edwardsville, Illinois's LaBest Academy, recognized by the International Society of Canine Cosmetologists, offers a program that is intense and comprehensive. Students may enroll in a 640-hour, 16-week course as an Apprentice Pet Stylist, or develop their careers further with a post-professional program in advanced pet styling. Students not only learn the techniques of grooming but also basic animal health and behavior management techniques. Instruction in work with clients and manage a salon is also included.
