Pet Childcare Rules In Michigan

The official word from the state of Michigan is that they do not require registration of canine day cares or boarding facilities. The state says that there are no state laws covering facilities that deal with boarding or canine day cares. But laws do exist regarding what goes on within the day care facility. Remember that local governments may have very strict laws on the books or may require certain measures be taken. Check with your city and county agriculture departments or animal control.

Employee Requirements

All employees dealing with animals in most counties in Michigan are required to have certain vaccinations. Most important, they are required to have a rabies vaccine series started when they begin employment. Employees should be of legal age or must have a parental consent form. Young volunteers and employees must adhere to state laws regarding work hours for their age group. If an employee is bitten by a dog, several counties require that the dog bite be reported to the proper authorities.

Pet Health

The majority of Michigan's counties require that pets in these situations be up to date on their state- required vaccines. The county or city may impose kennel cough (bordatella) vaccine on pets as well. Michigan does not have a requirement for dogs to be spayed or neutered before a certain age unless the owner is licensed to breed the animal. If animal abuse is suspected at the day care or at home, pets may be turned into the nearest Michigan county-run animal control for investigation or observation. Some counties or cities have laws in effect that residential areas may only have a certain number of dogs on the property at one time. Potential pet day care business owners should check for these laws, since they may have to apply for permission to have a higher number of animals on their property. Remember that these laws do not apply to pets owned by the land owner, but to animals on the property at one time.

Miscellanous

The facility is required to be kept clean in almost all Michigan counties. The facility must also properly dispose of pet waste. The owners of the business may be held responsible for pet injuries, accidental pregnancies or other mishaps while pets are on the facility's property. All laws for the zoning of the property apply to any business done at the facility and any written exceptions made by the city or county must be displayed at all times.
