Choose bright colors and fun accessories for a whimsical bedroom.
Decorating a girl's bedroom is a perfect opportunity to express your creativity and incorporate fun elements that may not work anywhere else in your home. Skip the boring, neutral basics in favor of a whimsical bedroom that is fun, fanciful and playful to perfectly express the personality of the girl who lives there.
Fairies
Nothing says whimsy like a room full of fanciful fairies. The perfect fairy room balances the delicate femininity of fairies with the rustic mystery of their forest hideaways. Begin by painting the walls in a pastel shade of pink, blue, green or purple, and add a border in a fairy or garden theme or use vinyl wall stickers featuring fairies, flowers and butterflies. Dress the windows with sheer window treatments made with iridescent, gauzy or gossamer-thin fabrics trimmed with ribbons, beads or embroidery. Hang fairy-themed mobiles from the ceiling or use fishing line to suspend butterflies and fairies. A plush, moss-green rug on the floor is reminiscent of the forest floor, and dark wood furniture adds to the deep woods feeling.
Mad Hatter's Tea Party
The Mad Hatter's Tea Party in "Alice in Wonderland" is the very definition of whimsical, and can set the stage for a fun and fanciful girl's room theme. Adorn one or more of the walls with a garden-themed mural, filled with unusual and colorful flowers. Frame mirrors or artwork depicting "Alice in Wonderland" scenes in a collection of mismatched frames spray-painted in bright colors, and hang a whimsical chandelier from the ceiling. Look for a topsy-turvy or other non-traditional chandelier -- for example, one made from teapots or teacups. Of course, a multi-colored table set for tea and tea-party themed accessories are a must-have in any Mad Hatter-themed room.
Polka Dots and Stripes
A whimsical room doesn't necessarily have to be a room filled with multicolored elements and an abundance of themed accessories. For a more subtle, but still whimsical effect, choose a graphic theme like polka dots or stripes. Choose a color scheme with two or three colors, and incorporate multiple shades of those colors into the room. For example, for a pink and brown polka dot-themed room, paint the walls pink and add multiple sizes of polka dots in darker shades of pink and brown. Put a polka dot rug on the floor, and use polka dotted bedding and accessories.
Literary Inspired
Almost any theme room can be whimsical if you choose the right style of decor and accessories. Choose items that have folk art or stylized images of common items. For example, owls rendered in patchwork in bright shades of pink, blue and purple are a fun theme for a girl's room. Or, go under the sea and decorate a girl's bedroom with a friendly mermaid. Daisies, ladybugs or butterflies set the stage for a whimsical bedroom, or base the design on a favorite children's book, such as "Fancy Nancy," "Pinkalicious" or "The Very Hungry Caterpillar." Don't limit yourself to a literal interpretation of the story, but instead take inspiration from the colors and overall feel of the book.
