With a crate you can easily make a crawfish trap.
Crawfish traps are smaller versions of lobster pots. Modern crawfish traps come in a wide range of designs and sizes; they incorporate a wire cone of cloth that permits the crawfish to enter but not depart. Square traps are preferred by many crawfish harvesters. Round traps often roll under the force of the water currents.
Instructions
1. Remove the bottom of the crate with the claw hammer. Measure the dimensions of the crate using a measuring tape.
2. Cut a piece of wire mesh corresponding to the dimensions of the bottom of the crate. Allow a few inches on each side for a folding seam. Attach this to the bottom of the crate.
3. Cut a long piece of wire mesh corresponding to the dimensions of the walls of the crate. Line the crate with the wire mesh.
4. Cut two pieces of wire mesh a few inches longer than half the top of the crate. Cut two pieces of hardware cloth the same width as the two pieces of wire mesh; attach them to the ends of the two pieces. Attach the two pieces of wire mesh to either side of the top of the crate.
5. Mark 10 inches from the trap's center. Place marks at 1 /2 inches on either side of the 10-inch mark. Attach the loose ends of the two pieces of wire mesh to these marks; ensure that they arch to the front. Repeat this step from the bottom side of the crate.
6. Cut a small door at the back of the trap, and insert a bait box. Attach a strong line at the top of the trap to haul it through the water.
