Get The Education In Grooming Your Dog & Training

A job in dog grooming or training is an ideal choice for an individual who loves animals. The job requires a specialized set of skills that can be easily obtained from a variety of training sources. Some individuals enter the field with nothing more than a high school diploma and learn the trade through apprenticeship programs, while others participate in training programs specifically designed to equip individuals with the skills necessary to be successful in the industry.

Instructions

1. Participate in vocational education in high school. Often these programs offer a section that is appropriate to individuals looking to pursue a career in the animal care industry. Consider taking advantage of the vocational education programs offered in your area high school, as they can be a cost-saving training option.

2. Attend a workshop at a local community college. Contact community colleges in your area and inquire about workshops related to dog training. Many community colleges have dog-training programs that range from four to 12 weeks. These programs teach prospective dog trainers the techniques of effective dog training. Individuals who complete these programs often receive a certification, which can be useful in establishing your business because it demonstrates your competency in the field.

3. Seek an apprenticeship. Many pet groomers learn the tricks of the trade through an apprenticeship program. In these programs, which traditionally run six to 10 weeks, novice groomers work with individuals who are already established in the field to learn the art of effective dog grooming.

4. Consider an accredited grooming school. There are 52 accredited schools of dog grooming throughout the country, according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics. These schools offer intensive dog grooming classes. The length of the programs offered by these schools varies from two to 18 weeks. In these programs, students start out only focusing on the basics of washing and drying and eventually move up to the complex cutting tasks associated with grooming. It can be beneficial for individuals to attend an accredited dog-grooming school, as a certification from an accredited school can act as a good credential when establishing a career in the industry.

5. Form a professional affiliation. While it is not required that dog groomers or trainers associate themselves with a professional organization, it is strongly recommended. Many pet owners specifically seek individuals who are affiliated with a well-respected pet grooming and training association. Join a dog grooming and training association that is active in your area, such as the National K-9 Dog Trainers Association or the International Association of Dog Training Professionals. Along with adding to your credibility as a professional, these organizations frequently offer tutorials and training sessions that allow members to continue their education and keep on top of any new advancements in the industry.
