Items To Make Use Of To Wash Colored Walls

Soap and water will clean up simple dirty spots on walls.

Over time, walls will get dirty, but cleaning painted walls can make a person a bit uneasy if you have used a water-based paint especially, because the paint could be wiped off. There are a few different ways that you can clean walls depending on the degree of the stain. If the stain cannot be worked out, you will have to touch up the area of paint.

Soap and Water

Using liquid soap and water is an easy solution to make and with which to clean walls. Put warm water and soap in a bucket. Soak a cloth and or a sponge in the solution and dab it along the wall. If dabbing will not take the stain out, then rub a little harder. Do not scrub, though, because that could strip the wall of the paint and you will then have to retouch it.

Degreaser

Adding a degreaser to water is another option if there is a particularly oily or stubborn stain on the wall. Degreasers may already be in your home, so they will be easy to use. As with the soap and water, do not scrub the wall because there is a chance the paint will begin to come off.

Baking Soda

Make a paste out of baking soda and water. Rub this in circles on the stain gently. The paste should be thick and not watery. Start with a mixture of 3 parts baking soda and 2 parts water. Add baking soda or water as necessary until you have a thick but spreadable consistency. It is non-toxic and easy to make. This paste can be used on walls that have a flat paint, which often comes off easy. If you are nervous about the paint on your walls, this is a gentle way to begin cleaning them.

Considerations

Once you have cleaned the wall, dry it immediately. The more time water is on the wall, the more time that the paint gets saturated by it, and there is a chance it can run. This will require that you repaint that area of the wall. Also, if your wall was dirty to begin with, you may need to wash the whole wall because cleaning one spot will change the color the spot on the wall appears. You can clean the whole wall using the same materials that you used on the stains.
