Control Ammonia Levels Inside A Dog Kennel

Learn keep your dog's kennel clean and free of ammonia fumes.

Kennels are a common way for both commercial breeding companies and private individuals to house dogs. Kennels give dogs a safe, secure, confined space to sleep and rest in while owners are away. Following a few basic common sense practices will keep your dog's kennel clean and free of the unpleasant and even dangerous odor of ammonia, which is caused by high levels of stagnant urine. Keeping a clean kennel will also help your dog remain healthy and happy.

Instructions

1. Remove the dog from the kennel daily when you're home. Give the dog time and space to run around and relieve itself outside and away from its kennel.

2. Clean your dog's kennel daily to keep it free of harmful ammonia fumes that are released from built-up urine. Remove bedding, toys, food and water dishes from the kennel so that it is empty. Spread a thin layer of zeolite or kitty litter along the floor of the kennel. Let the mineral or litter sit on the floor of the kennel for 15 to 20 minutes to absorb urine.

3. Sweep or shovel up the used zeolite or kitty litter into a trash bag and throw it away. Hose down or wash the kennel with clean, fresh water and allow it to dry completely. Machine-wash bedding in hot water with detergent and dry it thoroughly.

4. Add bedding, toys and dishes back into the kennel. Leave an open, empty space at the back of the kennel to allow your dog a space in which to relieve itself when it can't be let outside.

5. Place the kennel outside or in a well-ventilated area. Improve air flow by placing an oscillating fan nearby that's directed at the kennel.
