Sanitize Following A Dog With Earthworms

Worms are parasites that live in your dog's intestines. They are a common problem, especially in dogs that spend any significant time outside. Because some types of worms can be transferred to humans, it is important for both your dog's and your own sake to sanitize the environment you both share.

Sanitizing a Kennel or Crate

If your dog has had worms, its kennel or crate must be scrubbed with water and bleach. Change its bedding. If it sleeps on a dog bed, wash the bed in a washing machine with a strong detergent. If it sleeps on straw, burn the straw in a safe place and put new bedding down. Your dog's toys should also be sanitized.

Sanitizing a Yard

In order to keep a yard clean where a dog plays and/or relieves itself, it's important to clean up stools before they break down. If the yard is already infected, you can sanitize it by spreading 10 lbs. of sodium borate per 100 square feet of yard.

Sanitizing the Home

Linoleum, tile and wood floors in your home should be disinfected with Pine-Sol or a similar type of cleaner. Work the solution into any floor cracks. Carpets and rugs should either be cleaned with an EPA-approved vacuum cleaner or cleaned with a product like a Rug Doctor to which a disinfectant has been added. If you let your dog sleep on any furniture, then those must be disinfected, too. If you have been handling any of your dog's possessions, wash your hands thoroughly.
