Recycle Scrap Paper

Most scrap paper can be recycled.

If you're an avid paper hobbyist or scrapbooker, you'll likely be left with a large amount of scrap paper that you want to recycle. You may even have a pile of scrap paper from newspapers to snack bags that you don't know what to do with. Recycling your scrap paper takes two forms: sorting your paper for recycling by your local city or recycling the paper by using it in innovative ways for new projects.

Instructions

Sort the Paper for Recycling

1. Separate the scrap paper into four groups: newspaper, white paper, colored paper and "other." The "other" pile should contain any paper not recyclable by your local city collection authority. For example, paper with embellishments like glitter or paint are not recyclable, nor are papers with coatings (like wax or plastic).

2. Place the white, colored, and newsprint curbside (assuming your local recycling company can recycle all types of paper. If they can't, move it to the "other" pile. Remove any staples, rubber bands, or any other non-recyclable components from the paper before you put it curbside.

3. Turn the remaining "other" pile into wrapping paper. Larger sheets of scrap paper can be used to wrap small gifts (make paper ribbon by cutting strips). Smaller pieces can be glued together to make a collage: let the collage dry then use the larger sheets as wrapping paper.

4. Cut the paper into 3 inch x 3 inch squares and use them as telephone note pads or grocery lists. Put the 3 inch x 3 inch stacks into a recycled box or tin (for example, a peanut tin).

5. Call your local elementary school and ask if they accept donations for paper for art projects. Plain paper or fancy paper can be used by children for drawing and pictures can be used for collages. With teachers struggling to supply their students with art materials, your donation could be gratefully received.

6. Shred the paper for packing material or use it for your compost pile. Call local human societies, kennels, or dog breeders and ask them if they can use a donation of shredded paper for animal bedding.
