Instructions
1. Identify online and print publications that list rental properties for sale. Some of the grocery stores and newspaper racks you find around town stock free rental-listing booklets. "For Rent" and "Rental Guide Apartments" are two print publications to consider. These publications also offer online search options. Other online search options are any of the major real estate firms that service the area, such as Coldwell Banker, RE/MAX and Keller Williams.
2. Identify the number of bedrooms, bathrooms, home and community amenities you want in your home. Make a list of these items so you can narrow down the choice of your search to the properties that fit your needs. Also consider neighborhoods in Dallas and Fort Worth. For example, if you want to live near the Las Colinas area because that is where you work, then list zip codes that are close to this area of Dallas.
3. Gather homes from your online and publication search that fit your needs. Go through the print publications and narrow down your choices to the homes and apartments that have the square footage and other amenities you are seeking in your home. When you conduct online searches from the rental listing websites, the search function allows you to enter your search criteria into the system and then lists the properties for rent that fit those criteria.
4. Contact the listed number or email address to schedule an appointment to view the property. Each home or apartment listing provides contact information, such as the name of the homeowner or real estate agent and a contact phone number or email address. Call or email the contact to schedule an appointment.
5. View each property and take notes. As you visit each property at the scheduled time of your appointment, take notes on the pros and cons of the property. This will help when you are reviewing the properties later to choose the best property for you. You can also use your camera phone or digital camera to document your visit to the properties.
6. Read your notes and narrow down your choices. After you visit each of the properties, conduct a side-by-side comparison of each of the properties. Use the notes to prioritize the rental properties so that the properties that fit the majority of your needs and wants are at the top of the list. Review the top three choices on your list and decide which property is the best one for you.
