A CDL is required to drive a semitrailer in Pennsylvania.
A CDL, or commercial driver's license, is required in Pennsylvania if you are driving any of the following: a vehicle weighing more than 26,000 lbs.; a vehicle and towed unit that together exceed 26,000 lbs.; a vehicle carrying 15 or more passengers; a school bus, or a vehicle transporting hazardous materials.
Instructions
1. Fill out Form DL-31D. This form is an application for a Pennsylvania CDL learner's permit. Review the Pennsylvania Commercial Driver's License manual.
2. Visit a Pennsylvania Department of Transportation Driver License Center. Take the form and your current Pennsylvania driver's license, proof of identity and residency, Social Security card, and check or money order for the fees. There are a few different ways to prove your identity and residency in Pennsylvania. Study the Commercial Driver's Manual to prepare for the knowledge test required for a CDL learner's permit.
3. Train for the road test. You may train for the test in a few different ways, none of which are required, but are helpful. Truck driving schools across Pennsylvania provide hands-on experience behind the wheel of a commercial vehicle. Distance learning courses are also available from many sources.
4. Pass the road test to obtain the CDL.
