Delsym In Dogs

Delsym can be an effective pain reliever for dogs.

Delsym is classified for human use as a cough suppressant. For use in veterinary medicine, it has been found to be an effective pain reliever and anti-itch remedy.

Definition

Delsym is an over-the-counter medication manufactured by Reckitt Benckiser. The generic name for Delsym is dextromthorphan. Delsym is available in liquid or capsule form.

Pain Reliever

Dr. Brett Beckman, a veterinary dentist practicing at Affiliated Veterinary Specialists in Orlando, Florida, reported that when combined with opiates and/or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, Delsym is used as an analgesic before oral surgery. For this application, a 2 mg dosage of Delsym is given orally.

Anti-Itch Medication

Pruritus is a condition that causes a dog's skin to become irritated. It can be caused by parasites or an allergic reaction. Some dogs develop pruritus because of repetitive scratching caused by stress. The Journal of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics reported that a 2 mg gelatin tablet given orally every 12 hours for 14 days gave itch relief to the majority of dogs.

Dosage

For most dogs, 2 mg is the standard dosage. Veterinarians may adjust the dose according to your dog's size.

Side Effects

Side effects for Delsym can include drowsiness, confusion, shakiness and unusual excitement. Less common side effects may include asthma, constipation, nausea or vomiting and stomach pain.
