Look For A Teacup Yorkie

Teacup Yorkshire Terriers are particularly small Yorkies.

Yorkshire Terriers, better known as Yorkies, are popular small dogs used primarily for companionship. According to American Kennel Club (AKC) guidelines, Yorkies must weigh between four and seven pounds. Yorkies weighing less than four pounds are called "Teacup Yorkies," but they are not a distinct breed recognized by the AKC. According to the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America, such small dogs tend to be more susceptible to illnesses and inherited disorders, so buyers should take special care about where they get a Teacup Yorkie.

Breeders

1. Find a reputable breeder by looking through professional organizations such as the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America or the American Kennel Club or asking your vet. Few breeders specialize in Teacup Yorkies, so look for Yorkshire breeders and ask if they breed Teacups.

2. Visit before you commit. Check the breeder's facilities and the health of pups and parents before purchasing a puppy. Avoid purchasing from breeders with a poorly kept kennel and sluggish puppies since these signs may indicate future health problems for your dog.

3. Consider rescue shelters. Many dog organizations shelter abused or abandoned dogs that need good homes. Some list available dogs on a website, such as Rescueme.org, a clearinghouse site for non-profit shelters across the country.
