Yorkshire Terriers, better known as Yorkies, are popular small dogs used primarily for companionship. Yorkies weighing less than four pounds are called "Teacup Yorkies," but they are not a distinct breed recognized by the AKC. 2. Visit before you commit. Check the breeder's facilities and the health of pups and parents before purchasing a puppy. Avoid purchasing from breeders with a poorly kept kennel and sluggish puppies since these signs may indicate future health problems for your dog.
3. Consider rescue shelters. Many dog organizations shelter abused or abandoned dogs that need good homes. Some list available dogs on a website, such as Rescueme.org, a clearinghouse site for non-profit shelters across the country.
