Taking a train from Newfoundland to Quebec requires the help of a bus and a ferry. After all, Newfoundland is an island. Follow these steps to book a scenic adventure from the easternmost part of Canada, an island that boasts St. John's, North America's oldest city.
Instructions
Depart from Newfoundland
1. Start your journey on the Marine Atlantic ferry at Port Aux Basques or Placentia, Newfoundland. Book any of the 3 daily departures. You'll arrive in North Sydney, Nova Scotia, where taxis wait to take you to the bus station. Take the bus from North Sydney to Truro, Nova Scotia, where you can take VIA Rail's Ocean train into Quebec.
2. Book your train ticket online at the VIA Rail Canada Web site (see Resources below). Book the rest by calling 888-VIA-RAIL to speak with a representative directly. Provide your reservation number for the ticket(s) you already bought. Or, book the entire trip with a VIA Rail representative.
3. Plan for at least a 6-hour trip aboard the ferry. The sights will be amazing in this remote, paradise region. You'll see icebergs and untouched natural beauty.
4. Bid farewell to your new friends. With its small population, Newfoundlanders are known for being extremely kind to visitors and they are often sad to see you go.
Take the Ocean Train on VIA Rail
5. Determine the length of your trip. The train runs 6 days a week and takes approximately 21 hours in its entirety. There are more stops in Quebec than Nova Scotia.
6. Indulge in the easterly class, available specifically to Ocean passengers. This upgrade includes a learning coordinator to guide you through the sights, priority boarding, sleeper accommodations and the best dining options.
7. Order snacks at the dining car's ultra casual takeout counter. Menu items cater to both health nuts and junk food lovers.
8. Discover ways to discount your ticket. Seniors, kids and students can travel at much lower fares. Also, booking online generally means finding special fares.
