Create Book Folios

Sheets of folded folio pages sit on a table.

Folio form is a printing method where long sheets of paper are folded once vertically, dividing them into two leaves. Each sheet contains four printed pages. The folio printing method has existed since the creation of the printing press. Today, however, books are rarely printed in folio. Folio now most often describes a size of book standing about 15 inches tall. While Renaissance and modern folio formats share a common page size, they share little else.

Instructions

1. Print manuscript on paper. Folio format requires you to print four pages of manuscript per sheet of paper. Print the center pages first, and the first and last pages last. If you were printing a 16-page book, the first printed sheet would contain, in order, pages 8 and 9 on the front with pages 10 and 7 on the back. Whereas the last printed sheet would contain, in order, pages 2 and 15, with pages 16 and 1 on the back.

2. Lay printed sheets of paper on top of each other in the order in which they were printed. The middle two pages should face up.

3. Sew a straight line through the middle of the stacked sheets, binding the pages together. Repeat this step, sewing several lines for a sturdy binding.

4. Fold the stacked sheets once along the sewn middle line. Page one should now face up. Your book is complete.
