Creating A Metal Frame

Building a Metal Frame

Metal frames are made using a variety of different methods. Welding and soldering metal is one way to attach metal to metal. Another way is to apply fasteners to both pieces and connect the fasteners with screws. The best way to attach metal together is by using epoxy adhesives. Metal frames are easy to make and don't require much skill. The same instructions apply whether you are building a frame 6 inches, or a frame 3 feet. Larger frames use heavier duty hangers to hold them up, but the actual framing construction is basically the same.

Instructions

1. Measure and cut 4 equal strips from a piece of flat sheet metal. The metal can be purchased at any hardware store. Use a flat edge and a pencil to mark your cuts. Cut the metal with a pair of electric shears. For the sake of this article, cut your strips 1-inch by 6-inches.

2. Lay out 2 metal strips vertically, parallel to each other, 6 inches apart. Dispense 1 pea size dot of a 2-part acrylic on both ends of both strips. Use a mixing nozzle attached to an epoxy gun.

3. Place a strip of metal horizontally across the top and bottom of the vertical strips so that both pieces are resting on the acrylic adhesive flush with the ends. You should have a square.

4. Cut 2 additional strips of metal to fit in the vertical sections between the horizontal strips. Measure the sections and then cut the strips to fit. Glue them in using the same epoxy.

5. Apply a metal, half circular, picture frame hook on the upper back center, using the same acrylic adhesive. These hooks have side flanges for attaching to objects. Glue the flanges to the frame.
