Begin A Canine Training Business Within My Garage

Everyone wins through dog training: dog, owner and trainer.

Training dogs is not only an emotionally rewarding experience, it can also be a financially rewarding business. Many individuals who purchase or inherit dogs are clueless when it comes to housebreaking and general obedience training, and many will happily pay someone who can help turn Fido into a well-behaved member of the family. Beginning a dog training business in your garage requires little in the way of start-up costs and can start earning you money in a matter of days.

Instructions

1. Become a professional dog trainer. The most important step to take toward starting a successful dog training business in your garage is to become a certified dog trainer. You can do this by attending local classes and seminars in your area. The American Dog Trainers Network suggests that you attend at least 24 one- to four-day dog training sessions that cover a wide variety of topics including housebreaking, puppy behavior, competition obedience, aggressive dogs, and more.

2. Get registered. In order to operate in most municipalities, you must register your business with the town, city or county in which you live. This process allows the city to collect taxes against your earnings. In most cases, you simply need to complete a form that identifies your business name, your business structure, your physical address and the type of business you will be involved in. You will also be expected to pay a registration fee in order to obtain your license.

3. Obtain liability insurance. Because having a variety of dogs on your property can pose a potential risk to both yourself, your property and passersby, you need to obtain liability insurance to protect you against financial loss. Most local insurance agents can quickly quote rates and start your policy within hours. As with any other insurance purchase, shop around for the best price on the best coverage for your situation. Your insurance agent should be able to assist you with finding the right coverage for the right price.

4. Purchase your training aids. Professional dog trainers have a supply of tools they use to elicit appropriate behaviors from the dogs they train. Basic tools of the trade include leashes, standard buckle collars, choke collars, treats for positive reinforcement, a clicker and a muzzle.

5. Market your business. A successful dog training business must be marketed to attract customers. The best way to do this with a small, start-up business is to start a grassroots campaign targeting local customers. Place ads in your local newspaper, in your telephone book and on the bulletin boards of local veterinarians. You can also advertise through social media outlets such as Facebook and Twitter, but try to keep your marketing campaign local. One of the most effective ways to market your business is through word of mouth. When it comes to their pets, most people trust the advice of their veterinarians. Take the time to get to know local veterinarians and make a positive impression on them before you advertise in their clinics. The referrals from these professionals are worth their weight in gold.
