The Maltese dog is a toy breed that's suitable both as a family pet and a show ring breed. This type of dog is not for everyone, so it's best to do your homework about the characteristics of the Maltese before bringing one home.
Temperament
The Maltese is extremely lively and maintains a playful personality well into his adult years. At the same time, he ranks high in terms of gentleness for toy breeds. The dog is affectionate and requires a great deal of love and attention from his owner. They do not do well left alone for long periods of time, and will display symptoms of separation anxiety that include barking, chewing or destroying objects in the home.
Size
The adult Maltese dog ranges in size from 5 to 12 pounds; the standards from the American Kennel Club are less than 7 pounds for a show breed. The lifespan of this smaller dog is 12 to 14 years or longer.
Maltese love children, but because the dog is very small in size they are not recommended in a home with young children who might accidentally be too rough.
Health Concerns
The Maltese breed is known to have very few health issues. Routine checkups are recommended.
Grooming
The Maltese has a single coat with little or no shedding. It is considered "hypoallergenic" and great for people who are normally allergic to dogs. Keeping the Maltese dog groomed with a "puppy cut" will require only a light brushing every two days and a bath every one to two weeks. The tear stains that are common in this breed can be cleaned with a soft cloth during each bath, or with a tear stain cleaner obtained from your veterinarian's office or pet supply store.
Training
This highly intelligent dog can be easily trained to perform tricks and obey commands. However, this breed is known to be difficult to housebreak. Diligent and early training is necessary. Constant supervision with a leash is recommended. Place your puppy in a crate whenever you cannot give him your undivided attention. Lavish him with praise and give him special treats each time he successfully relieves himself outdoors.
Purchasing
The Maltese makes a great family pet.
Although there are many irresistible Maltese puppies for sale at pet stores, this is not the best source for purchasing a puppy. Find a reputable breeder, preferably one that has both the puppy's mother and father on site. Observe their temperament. Learn about the breeder's treatment of the puppies. A well-bred puppy will bring years of enjoyment to your family and home.
