Outdoor carpeting, like indoor carpeting, is bound to go through normal wear and tear such as spills and stains, as well as the occasional pet accident. After cleaning the accident, it is important to deodorize your carpet to avoid any persistent emanating odors which might attract other animals. Using basic ingredients found in your kitchen, you can eliminate these odors and maintain the quality of your carpet.
Instructions
1. First, clean the spot using a solution of water and vinegar (20 percent vinegar, 80 percent water). The vinegar acts as a deodorizer for urine smells, neutralizing the odor. Thoroughly wet the stain and rub the solution in with your fingers. After cleaning, remove as much wetness as possible by blotting with dry towels.
2. Apply a generous amount of baking powder to cover the spot and let it soak in. Wait at least two hours (overnight if possible).
3. Vacuum the spot to remove as much of the baking soda as you can. You will not be able to get all of it up.
4. Steam clean the spot using a steam cleaner designed for carpets. Any excess baking soda will be removed in the process.
5. Hang the carpet (if possible) to aerate and dry. This will take at least four hours.
