Train Pointers With Pigeons

German pointers are dogs known for their royal lineage and as a breed of excellent hunters. These dogs are often used during fowl or bird hunting, to help hunters locate and target their prey. Even for small-game hunting, these dogs make excellent companions and are also perfect to keep as a family pet. German pointers, with their happy-go-lucky nature, are also known as natural gun dogs. If you want to hunt pigeons, you might want to train a German pointer to help you on your quest. The training is easy and simple.

Instructions

1. Observe your dog's behaviors to become more familiar with his actions and reactions. If your German pointer is not looking at you while you are hunting, this does not mean that he is not listening. Their eyes are usually on their prey.

2. Allow the dog to maintain enough control of the field if possible. This means that you should not restrict the areas where your dog can be in charge during hunting. Allow your dog to freely express his instincts while hunting for your prey.

3. Make your training fun and enjoyable. Avoid shouting at your German pointer or punishing him if he does something wrong. Reward the dog with a small treat or praise him whenever he shows correct behavior.

4. Fasten a check-leash to the collar of your dog. Wear gloves when you hold your German pointer, especially if he is stronger or larger than you.

5. Use your remote launcher to launch the pigeons downwind from the German pointer. Keep your check-leash slack as your dog begins to point. Watch him carefully for signs that he will dart. Thrush your pigeons by firing the rifle just a few moments after your dog points. This will teach your dog that he will be unrewarded if he chases your prey.

6. Shorten the distance allowed for your German pointer to chase the pigeons prior to each thrush. Tighten your dog's leash gradually in your hand in order to prevent your dog from darting. Reward your dog with treats if he is able to hold the point.

7. Continue training your dog daily. It may take a few weeks or months before your dog learns hold a point for as long as you wish.
