Develop A 4x4 Wooden Mailbox Publish

Mailbox and Post

Building your own mailbox post is a straightforward process, but there are a number of things you will have to take into consideration. The U.S. Post Office sets forth regulations that govern the size and placement of your mailbox. Before you begin, you should contact the Post Office and ask for a copy of the regulations. Another consideration is the treatment of the wooden post to prevent rot and extend the life of your mailbox post.

Instructions

1. Locate the spot where you will place your mailbox post. According to Post Office regulations in 2010, the open end of your mailbox should be 6 to 8 inches from the edge of the road surface.

2. Dig a hole 18 to 24 inches deep with the post-hole digger. Measure the depth of your post hole.

3. Cut the 4- by 4-inch post to the correct length. According to 2010 Post Office regulations, the bottom of your mailbox should be 41 to 45 inches off the surface of the road. Take into account the depth of the hole and the height of the curb to ensure your mailbox will sit at the correct level.

4. Place the post in the hole and ensure one face is parallel to the road. Use the level to ensure it is standing straight.

5. Fill the bottom 4 to 6 inches of the hole around the post with gravel and tamp it down. Check the post with a level. Add another 6 inches of dirt and check the level again. Continue adding dirt, 6 inches at a time, and tamping it down. Check the level after each addition of dirt.

6. Attach the platform board to the top of the mailbox post. Place the board on the top of the post and ensure it is centered. Drive four screws through the board and into the post. Attach your mailbox to the platform with screws.
