Safe exercise areas are important for man's best friend.
No matter what size your dog is, he needs a safe area outside for exercise. If you don't have a fenced-in yard, or you're trying to protect some expensive landscaping, you can construct a safe exercise pen or play yard.
Instructions
1. Fence fabric is one of the things you'll need for a play yard.
Decide how large you want the exercise area to be, and measure the space. This will determine how many fence posts you will need, and how much hardware and fence fabric to buy. Take the measurements to a home center; the sales associates can help you decide on the exact fabric and hardware. Larger dogs will require higher, stronger fencing than small ones and, of course, more space.
2. Dig holes for the terminal posts (corner and end) and gate posts. The holes should be bigger at the bottom than at the top to allow the concrete mix to properly secure the posts. The terminal posts should be about 2 inches higher than the fence fabric itself.
3. Mix the concrete according to the manufacturer's instructions. Set the terminal and gate posts into the ground, securing them with concrete in the holes. Use a builder's level to ensure everything is level.
4. Determine the placement of your line posts, and set them the same way as the terminal and gate posts. Line posts should be about 2 inches below the fence fabric.
5. Attach fence hardware to the terminal and line posts, using it to set the top rail in place. Again, take care that everything is level.
6. Hang the chain link fence fabric on the fence posts and top rail, following the manufacturer's instructions. Use the fence stretcher to ensure the fabric is taut. Continue to check the level.
7. Locks are often necessary on gates.
Set the gate into place using the gate hardware. Be sure it swings freely, and that the latch is one that your dog can't open. Some dogs are real escape artists, and a lock might prove necessary.
