No-kill animal shelters value the lives of the animals in their care regardless of age, length of stay or health status. Euthanasia procedures, commonly used to weed out the animals least likely to find homes, are not performed in no-kill animal shelters. Grants for no-kill shelters target organizations that adhere to these principles and also play an active role in finding homes for rescued animals.
Maddie's Fund
Maddie's Fund, founded by Dave and Cheryl Duffield in memory of Maddie, their Miniature Schnauzer, has been around for over 30 years. The organization sponsors fourteen different grant programs designed to provide financial assistance to community animal shelter organizations, no-kill community coalitions and individual shelter facilities. Grant amounts range from $5,000 for starter facilities to multi-million dollar contributions for community-wide coalition projects involving multiple organizations. Maddie's Fund also sponsors projects for the U.S. Colleges of Veterinary Medicine organization that place licensed veterinarians in no-kill facilities, so sheltered animals can remain healthy.
Regina Bauer Frankenburg Foundation
The Regina Bauer Frankenburg Foundation provides grant monies to support organizations and programs that protect and care for sheltered animals, and promotes efforts that preserve endangered species. The foundation funds projects that support animal adoptions, spay-neuter programs and no-kill animal shelters within the New York City area. The Regina Bauer Frankenburg Foundation also sponsors organizations that fight against the mistreatment of animals, including animal research studies and issues surrounding animal cruelty. Eligible applicants must operate as public charity organizations, as defined by the Internal Revenue Service Code.
The Grey Muzzle Organization
The Grey Muzzle Organization specializes in addressing the needs of senior-aged dogs in animal shelters, as well as elderly companion dogs in homes. Grant awards go to organizations that provide hospice care, medical screening and senior dog adoption services. Some of the projects funded by the organization include no-kill animal shelters, sanctuaries and rescue organizations. The Grey Muzzle Organization also sponsors newly developed nonprofit facilities that provide for the needs of senior dogs. Financial assistance is available to adoptive families that need help covering medical expenses related to the care of an elderly dog.
Animal Assistance Foundation
The Animal Assistance Foundation is a Colorado-based organization offering grant funding to projects that promote the humane treatment of animals and animal rights issues. The foundation offers model state grants and service grants to eligible facilities and organizations. Model state grants target community-based efforts, while service grants provide for medical services for sheltered animals. Eligible applicants operate as government-sponsored facilities or nonprofit organizations. The Animal Assistance Foundation supports projects that promote collaboration between animal organizations and public awareness programs highlighting the link between animal cruelty and violence amongst humans.
