Get Papers For Any Pure Breed Dog

Register your purebred dog to ensure its value.

There are several associations, such as the American Kennel Club and Continental Kennel Club, that offer you the opportunity to get papers for a purebred dog. Each association has a specific set of guidelines to follow. Having papers makes a dog more valuable if you plan to breed or sell it later.

Instructions

1. Get a purebred dog from a breeder or owner who has completed the registration of the litter. The owner of the mother dog is required to register the entire litter with the AKC (American Kennel Club) or the CKC (Continental Kennel Club) at the time of birth.

2. Obtain from the breeder or owner a copy of the registration application for the dog. This will have information about the parent dogs and the name and address of the association where you will send all of the information. Make sure the application is signed by the breeder or owner.

3. Complete the application for registration to the AKC or CKC. This includes choosing a name, completing the description, and signing and dating the application. If the application indicates that photos are required, you will need to supply them.

4. Follow the directions on the application. If you have any questions, call the association. Any error can slow the registration process. Also submit the required payment for registering your dog.

5. Send the registration application as directed by the association. Do a search online for the association; sometimes an application can be completed online.

6. Watch your mailbox for a copy of the dog's papers. The wait depends on the time of year, which association is used, and how well the application is completed.
