Children Mural Ideas

Spice up your child's bedroom with a custom painted mural, giving his room character and charm.

Children are naturally curious and colorful by nature, so their room should reflect these qualities. Instead of opting for a traditional pink and purple-clad room for girls and a sports-themed blue room for boys, try your hand at something more creative, like a mural reflecting their interests. Your child will love having a room personalized specifically for him; even better, let him help with the design process. Be as creative and detailed as your budget and patience will allow.

Race Track

If your son or daughter can't seem to get enough of watching car racing, turn his or her bedroom into a personalized speedway. Paint a black and white checkered flag border around the top of the walls, touching either the ceiling or the molding strip. If you don't have the patience for painting each box, purchase a wallpaper border to save time. Instead of painting the entirety of each wall, block out a narrower strip for the mural that will wrap around the room. Paint the base color of the walls that are not part of the mural area dark gray, representing the track's asphalt. Add an asphalt-like texture using sponges, to give the gray some depth. Paint a thin black border around the blocked off area, with white dash lines above and below the borders, representing lanes. As far as the mural goes, be as colorful and detailed as you want. If your child has a favorite driver, paint that car as accurately and prominently as possible. You can either paint a line of cars around the entire room, simulating a race, or be a little more artistic, combining different angles of cars, drivers, red, yellow, green and checkered flags, pit stops and crews. If there is a doorway leading to the child's bathroom, paint the words "Pit Stop" above or alongside the doorway. Paint a scoreboard with your child's name and car number by their bed, in the winner's position, of course.

Farm Village

A farm themed mural is perfect for those children living not only in the country, but for city kids as well. Start by determining your child's favorite barnyard animals and whether or not you are able to paint them yourself. You can purchase stencils and paint-by-number mural kits to help your project along. Paint a red wooden barn with attached silo that goes around the room's doorway, with the huge barn doors open, facing out from the main structure. This will give your child the feeling that he or she is entering a barn every time he leaves the room. Paint a wooden fence around the entire room, with rolling green hills and pastures in the distance. Paint the ceiling a vibrant sky blue with white clouds, tying the walls and the ceiling together. In one of the corners, paint a giant tree that spans a few inches onto each adjoining wall, giving a more three-dimensional effect. Paint little chickens or bunnies around the base of the tree, with flowers, tall grass and weeds growing upward, adding towards the realistic effect. Don't forget the cows, pigs, llamas, goats and horses, either roaming free, or kept in their various stables and pens. For something cute, create a large mud puddle complete with a portly pig rolling around on his back, splashing mud into the air or on surrounding animals.

Outer Space

For children curious about space, an outer space themed mural is perfect for their bedroom. Start with a dark base color, such as a dark blue or black, or try to blend and fade colors, going from a brighter blue or purple towards the ceiling, gradually getting darker until it becomes black towards the floorboard. For those with excellent artistic ability, paint a colorful swirl of blended colors in pinks, purples or blues, creating a galaxy-looking shape similar to the Milky Way. Dot the walls with various stars and planets. There are always stencils and stickers you can purchase if you can't quite paint this yourself. Where your child's bed meets the wall, paint rocket launching into space. Your child's bed will look great coming out from the detailed shuttle. If your child is into aliens, paint some cute cartoony-aliens peering out from around the shuttle's wings. Don't paint anything too scary, especially for younger kids, because you actually want them to be able to sleep in this room. Don't forget the ceiling; paint it black with stars and planets as well, giving the room a complete space-surrounded effect.
