Simple Fence Installation

Building even a simple residential fence on your own requires a lot of materials and equipment as well as time and patience. A wood fence with prefabricated wood panels is one of the simplest types of fences to build. Once you have the appropriate permits, there are a few steps that can help make the process of installing your own fence simple.

Permits

According to HooverFence.com, you may need zoning and building permits to add your fence. Your fence also may need to adhere to specific height restrictions, and the type of fence you are allowed to use may be limited. Check for fencing regulations that apply to your city and your neighborhood

According to HGTV.com, it's easiest to use stakes to mark the area where you want your fence to be. Connect each stake to a string to show an outline of your fence. Spray paint the ground for each fence post.

Once you have determined the appropriate post height, use a reciprocating saw to cut all your posts, if needed.

According to RanchLifePlastics.com, the first post hole you dig should be at the end or corner of your fence outline. All the holes should be about 36 inches deep. To simply remove the dirt, use a digger with an auger attachment. Remember to wear safety glasses and ear protection while using power digging tools. Or use a hand-held post-hole digger.

As you put each post into its hole, make sure that it will be flush with the fence panels. To help keep your posts upright, use a level. After you level a post, fill its hole only halfway with dirt.

Panels and Gates

Mark the location of your first fence panel and attach it to posts. Do the same with the rest of your panels. Make sure the panels are level, and then apply fast-drying concrete in all the pole holes.

Install your gate last. Make sure the gate is the same height as the fence. Also, make sure the rails are balanced as well. Use metal hinges to attach the gate to the gate frame. If you have a double gate, attach a cane bolt to keep one end of the gate in place. Finally, attach the latch to keep the gate closed.
