Dog shows are a great way to mingle and show off your hard work.
Whether you are a fan of a certain breed of dog or train dogs of every shape and size, dog shows offer a chance to show off your wonderful animal and possibly win money. Many people like to participate in dog shows in their local area and there are a variety of shows in dozens of locations in the state of Wisconsin.
Obedience Trials
Obedience trials allow dog trainers and handlers to show off their skills---both those of the handler and the dog itself. Obedience trials consist of several classes that are typically based on experience and previous awards won. According to the Dog Owner's Guide, obedience has existed as a sport since 1933.
Modern day obedience trials require the handler to issue commands that become increasingly more complex in higher classes. Commands can include walking (on and off a leash), sitting, standing, moving in patterns or remaining in position (often times with "distractions" to test the dog's response).

Junior Showmanship
Junior showmanship, or junior handling events, are open to amateur dog handlers between the ages of 9 and 18. The American Kennel Club (AKC) further divides these competitions into two classes: Novice and Open. Entrants are eligible to compete in the Novice class if they have not previously won three first-place awards in Novice competitions. The Open class is available to participants who have won three or more first-place awards in the Novice class. If a competitor wins a third first-place award during a Novice event, the superintend of the show can move her to the Open class.
