Have A Pet Into Canada

Heading to Toronto to take in some shows or finally taking that vacation to the Canadian Rockies just wouldn't be the same without bringing along Fido. Or perhaps you just don't want to lay out the incredible costs associated with kennels and dogsitters. Taking your pets into Canada is a relatively simple process, as long as you know the rules.

Instructions

1. Check airline policies first. If you are traveling by plane, be sure to check with your carrier, as company policies and charges differ for various animals. Often animals aren't allowed in the cargo hold and need to ride in the cabin, or vice versa.

2. Begin the paperwork at your veterinarian's office. Dogs and cats older than 3 months need a rabies vaccination and a certificate attesting to the vaccination. The vaccination should clearly reflect the animal's identity, weight, age and breed if applicable.

3. Obtain a permit for pet turtles and tortoises. The paperwork for this permit is found at Canada's Animal Inspection website. A small fee is charged based on size and breed.

4. Declare the health of your pet bird. Canadian customs allows the entry of birds with a declaration form attesting that the animal is healthy and has not been in contact with other birds within the last 90 days. This form is available at the customs office.

5. Get paperwork for your pet horse from the United States Department of Agriculture's Animal Health Inspection Service.
