Dog kennels must meet federal regulations.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) sets the rules for airline pet travel. In addition, each airline has its own policy for in-cabin and cargo travel. Check before booking.
Cabin Travel
Some airlines allow a carry-on kennel for a small pet. The kennel must meet the airline's specific size requirements and must fit under the seat.
Functional Requirements
The kennel must be strong and properly ventilated. It must be large enough for the dog to stand, turn and lie down. It must be easy to open, and its handles must be easily accessible. The bottom must include absorbent bedding materials or have a wire subfloor.
Food Guidelines
For pets traveling in the cargo area, empty food and water dishes, as well as food and a feeding schedule, must be accessible from the outside of the kennel. Airline personnel are required to feed puppies every 12 hours, mature dogs every 24 hours.
Limits
Only one animal per kennel is allowed with the exception of puppies who are less than 6 months old and under 20 pounds each.
Clear Labels
The kennel should be clearly marked with your name and address with arrows indicating the top and including the words "Live Animal."
