Rabies Exemptions In Or

Dogs meeting certain guidelines may be exempt from rabies vaccination requirements in Oregon.

Oregon state law requires dogs between 3 and 6 months of age to be immunized against rabies for the first time. Subsequent yearly rabies vaccinations are required. However, there are exceptions that could render a dog exempt from immunization.

Visiting Dogs

Dogs brought into Oregon for periods of less than 30 days are exempt from rabies vaccination requirements. Visiting dogs must be kept under strict supervision by owners.

Health Risks

A licensed veterinarian may examine and determine a dog to be exempt from a rabies vaccine based on health concerns. The veterinarian must record the reason for the exemption, the expiration date of the exemption (if any) and a detailed description of the dog, including color, breed, sex, name and age, on the rabies vaccination certificate. The certificate must also include the owner's name and address.

Dogs for Sale or Show

Dogs owned by dealers, breeders or exhibitors are exempt from the rabies vaccine requirements. Qualifying dogs must be confined to kennels except during transportation to and from dog shows or fairs, when they must be under strict supervision by owners.
