Dog Shows In Houston

Dogs perform a task as part of an agility competition.

Dog shows offer a variety of experiences for spectators. Some of the Houston dog shows are conformation events, which evaluate the dogs' physical attributes and identify them as good representations of breeding stock, while others can demonstrate the animal's agility, obedience and hunting skill. Some shows in Houston also feature seminars and vendors, allowing attendees the ability to learn about breeds and pick up merchandise that is geared toward their dogs.

Reliant Park World Series of Dog Shows

The Reliant Park World Series of Dog Shows, founded in 1977, is an annual 4-day event that is held in July of each year at the Reliant Center in Houston. The event is sanctioned by the American Kennel Club and supervised by Onofrio Dog Shows. Four separate shows are held during the event, including three conformation shows that each result in a Best in Show winner. In addition to the conformation shows, agility, obedience and flyball events are held. Breed organizations, such as the Houston Combined Specialty Association, Bluebonnet Boxer Club and the Galveston County Kennel Club, organize individual shows within the World Series. Seminars that educate visitors on breed types and behavior along with pet product vendors also are available to attendees.

International All Breed Canine Association Dog Shows

The IABCA is an organization that partners with the AKC. The Houston Shows are Alle Rasse Gruppe International Shows, a judging competition that is similar to European-style shows. The shows vary slightly from standard AKC shows in that dogs recieve written critiques from judges, are judged using style points in their breed rather than being judged against other dogs, and two to three dogs are chosen for Best in Show and Best Bred-by titles. The IABCA holds shows in Houston periodically and event dates are available on the organization's website.

The shows are held under the rules of the American Kennel Club and feature competitions among toy dog breeds, such as Yorkshire Terriers, Chihuahuas, Toy Fox Terriers, Pugs and Shih Tzu. The show is a conformation show, though agility and flyball demonstrations are present at some shows. Visitors also can view merchandise and services offered by vendors at the event.
