Vestibular Signs In Dogs

Dogs suffering from vestibular issues may display many signs.

The vestibular system essentially controls the dog's sense of balance. A gland located in the inner ear helps to keep the dog properly oriented within his surroundings. Most commonly, vestibular signs are related to disease, trauma, inner ear infections or injury.

Head Tilt

One of the most common vestibular signs is head tilt. The dog constantly tilts his head either toward the right or the left.

Walking

Because of the dog's loss of orientation, he may circle or stumble when walking. He may appear to have a "drunken" gait.

Eyes

Eye movements may be strange, involving jerks or odd rhythmical patterns such as moving from side to side or up and down.

Leaning

Feeling imbalanced, the dog may lean or even fall over in the same direction as her head tilt.

Additional Signs

Additional vestibular signs include a reluctance to walk or stand, shaking of the head and general disorientation or confusion.
