Dogs going through a worming treatment will need their bedding cleaned.
When a dog has worms several things need to be done in order to kill the worms. The dog must go through a treatment recommended by a veterinarian, but there will also be steps to follow at home. Cleaning the bedding is one of the key elements in completely getting rid of worms.
Instructions
1. Spray crate and carrier down with a bleach and water mix. Crates and carriers are often used for traveling and/or when the owners are away. Mix bleach with hot water at a 1:10 ratio in a spray bottle. Spray down the crate and carrier thoroughly and make sure it is completely dry before using it again. This process will help kill existing worms, preventing future problems for your pet during the worming treatment.
2. Wash the bed the dog sleeps on. Place the bed in the washing machine in hot water and add a mild detergent. For cedar chip beds, remove covering and wash in washing machine. Change the cedar chips. For foam beds, remove the covering first and wash in the washing machine in cold water and a mild detergent. Wash the foam in a tub filled with warm water and a cup of mild detergent. You will need to use your hands to soak and clean the foam to avoid ruining the foam. Make sure you wear gloves during this process. Once the foam is clean, empty the tub and refill it with clean water. Make sure the foam is rid of soap suds before hanging it out to dry with its cover.
3. Wash blankets, towels and rugs that are used as part of your pet's bedding. Place them into the washing machine and use hot water and a mild detergent.
4. Lay the bedding outside to dry. If you choose to dry the bedding in the dryer, place it on a tumble dry and low heat setting.
5. Throw away any part of the dog's bedding you cannot clean. As part of the worm treatment, it is recommended that you not keep any part of the bedding that can cause a new infestation.
