Numerous dogs end up at animal shelters.
The thousands of animal shelters in the United States accept strays and pets that are given up by owners. According to the Humane Society of the United States website, animal shelters annually provide for approximately 7 million dogs and cats, with about half of those animals having to be put to sleep. Animal shelters provide temporary housing to compassionately care for animals until an owner can be found. Each year, federal funds are made available to animal shelters.
Foreclosure Pets Grant
A downturn in the economy can even affect pets. The Foreclosure Pets Grant offers assistance to agencies that provide for animals that are forced into shelters because their owners have lost their home due to foreclosure. Grants are awarded year round to compensate for costs animal shelters already incur. The highest amount awarded per organization is $2,000.
Meacham Foundation Memorial Grant
The Meacham Foundation Memorial Grant provides funds for capital campaigns, building enhancements, and equipment acquisitions that directly impact the well-being of animals in shelters. Grants up to $4,000 may be conferred to organizations. The grant cannot be used for a shelter's operating budget. Named after Tressa Meacham, the grant dates back to 1969.
Second Chance Fund
The Second Chance Fund offers assistance to offset the medical costs of animals at a shelter. Grants are awarded to aid in the expenses involved with medical procedures for animals that have been abused or neglected. The grant aims to help animals recover from injuries sustained from abuse in hopes that they may lead a pain-free life. Grant funding up to $2,000 per fiscal year may be awarded to animal shelter agencies.
Maddie's Fund
Maddie's Fund was established in 1999 by Dave and Cheryl Duffield, who named the foundation after their pet dog who died in 1997. The agency seeks to create a society where all dogs and cats placed in shelters can find a caring home. In the 2007-2008 fiscal year, the agency distributed nearly 300 grants throughout the United States, totaling more than $14 million.
Grant opportunities from Maddie's Fund fall into five different categories. A Starter Grant provides for the agencies that report animal shelter information and for organizations to create a business plan for saving the lives of animals. The Community Collaborative Grant assists animal welfare organizations and veterinarians to create shelters for animals. The Lifesaving Award Grant provides for communities that attain adoptions for healthy dogs and cats at animal shelters. The College of Veterinary Medicine Grant offers support to animal medicinal programs for shelters. The Medical Equipment Grant supports the purchase of equipment for shelters that has at least one full-time animal doctor on staff.
