Typically, you write a Letter of Intent as an initial proposal to a second party. Many times you write these letters for business purposes, exchange of services, school admissions, grants or future agreements. A Letter of Intent is also referred to as a letter of interest or a memorandum. The main goal of the letter is to clearly and concisely express your intentions.
Instructions
1. Start your Letter of Intent with a formal heading and type the date in the upper left hand corner of the page.
2. Hit the "Return" key three times to leave ample space before you type the recipient's address. Type the address in the left margin as you would write it on an envelope.
3. Key "Re: Letter of Intent" two lines below the address. You may also type a specific subject in place of "Letter of Intent."
4. State your purpose or interest in the first few lines of your letter. Include the name or names of other affected parties.
5. Identify any guidelines, specific details, problems or considerations to be addressed in future paperwork or contracts.
6. Mention towards the close of your letter that this document isn't legally binding. Close the letter with "Sincerely" and type your name three lines underneath. Type your contact information including an address, phone number and email address.
7. Print your Letter of Intent on formal letterhead and sign your name above your contact information.
