Labrador Ear Flap Problems

Labrador Ear Flap Problems

Labradors' ears fold in a flap over the ear opening, which can cause the inside of the ear canal to be warm and moist. If the ear area isn't properly cared for, it can become a breeding ground for infections.

Infection Symptoms

When a labrador is shaking its head, rubbing its head on things and oozing yellow, brown or black discharge, it is likely the dog has an infection. You can often also smell the infection externally.

Otitis Externa

Otitis Externa is one type of ear infection labs can get. This is the infection of the ear canal that results in the buildup of ear wax or matted hair in the ear canal.

Otitis Media

Otitis Media is another type of ear infection Labradors can get. It's an internal infection, generally in the middle of the ear, and is caused by a mite, drainage in the ear or other bodily infections.

Allergies

Seasonal, food and plant allergies are also common causes of ear infections with Labradors.

Ear Mites

Ear mites are a common cause for ear infections, especially with puppies. These are crab-like parasites that nest in a dog's ear canal and must be removed.

Prevention/Solution

To prevent discomfort for your Labrador, be sure to check its ears often to be sure they are pink on the inside and do not smell. Clean its ears once a week with a solution purchased through your vet or at a pet store. If your dog suffers from allergies, contact your vet for proper medication.
