Can My Dog Get Kennel Cough Even When Vaccinated

Symptoms of kennel cough include a dry, honking cough.

If your dog makes a dry cough that sounds like honking and is also coughing up phlegm, it could have kennel cough. Vaccines are available for this form of bronchitis.

Kennel Cough

Veterinarians refer to the inflammation of a dog's windpipe and voice box as kennel cough, which can be caused by bacterial and viral infections.

Vaccine

Vaccines help protect your dog's health by creating immune responses to potentially dangerous diseases. The American Veterinary Medical Association says a vaccine is available for kennel cough.

Infection

Your dog could still get kennel cough if it is already infected when it receives the vaccination. Because different infectious agents can cause kennel cough, the vaccine cannot protect your dog against all of them.

Treatment

If your dog gets kennel cough, the symptoms should clear in about three weeks. You can help your dog by making sure it gets plenty of food, rest and water, according to the ASPCA. Your veterinarian might give your dog a cough suppressant to help with symptoms.

Considerations

Kennel cough is highly contagious. Even if other dogs in your home have been vaccinated, isolate any infected dog to avoid exposing others to the infection.
