Kinds Of Gates For Chain Link Fencing

Several types of gates are available for use with a chain-link fence.

Chain link fencing provides a relatively inexpensive way to protect a space, whether a back yard, property perimeter, kennel, sports field or industrial area. Several different types of gates are available, each suited to different applications, ranging from a simple swinging gate for a yard fence to large gates that protect wider openings such as driveways.

Swinging Gate

A swinging gate is a convenient way to provide access through a chain link fence for a walkway in a yard, or into a kennel, tennis court or other protected area. The gate usually consists of a steel frame with chain link wire fabric stretched over it. A special hinge with separable male and female sections connects the gate to the fence. Builders often mount the top hinge with the male section of the hinge pointing downward to prevent the gate from being lifted off the hinges. You can mount swinging gates side by side to form a double gate to protect a wider span in the fence.

Rolling Gate

A rolling gate works well for covering larger spaces in a chain link fence, particularly when there is not enough room for a swinging gate. The rolling gate possesses a pair of wheels with flanges on the rear of the gate. These wheels run on a pair of pipe tracks mounted on the side of the gate. A small set of wheels on the other end of the gate support the gate, rolling along the ground. To open, the gate runs along the tracks sliding along the length of the fence.

Combination Gate

Long swinging gates often use a set of roller wheels, similar to those on the bottom of a typical rolling gate, to support the end of the fence. The wheels are perpendicular to the length of the gate. As the gate opens, the wheels roll along in a large arc, supporting the gate on the ground. Particularly wide, rolling and swinging combination fences sometimes require a taller gate post on the hinge side. This allows a guy wire to connect from the top of the gate post to the far end of the gate, providing additional support for the gate.

Cantilever Gate

Cantilever gates for chain link fences are similar to rolling gates with one exception. Rather than using a set of wheels on the bottom end of the gate to support its weight on the ground, the gate is longer, so that the additional weight counter-balances the weight. This allows the gate to move freely back and forth along the fence line without requiring additional support. The increased demand on a cantilever gate to support itself requires substantial bracing along the gate to provide sufficient tensile strength. The clean design and smooth operation of cantilever gates makes them aesthetically appealing.

Overhead Gate

Builders typically suspend overhead gates from a beam or other overhead support. The gate runs on a trolley system that hangs from the beam, which supports the weight of both the trolley and the gate. A guide wheel, similar to that used in a rolling gate, goes onto the fence at the bottom to keep the gate close to the fence. Overhead gates are frequently used in indoor applications, such as protecting a space within a manufacturing facility.
