Listing Of Small Breed Dogs

The popular miniature poodle.

The American Kennel Club recognizes some 160 dog breeds, but none have the word "small" in the official breed name. Four breeds do have "miniature" in the official breed name. They stand around 1 foot in height if measured from the ground to the top of their shoulders. The smallest dog breeds in the world are usually called toy breeds or toy-sized breeds.

Miniature Poodle

Poodles come in three sizes: standard, miniature and toy. They are all considered separate breeds, even though the only difference in them is size. Miniature poodles stand between 10 and 15 inches tall, according to the American Kennel Club. These are highly intelligent, friendly dogs that can live in the country or the city. They do need to go to the groomer to manage their fast growing coats about every 6 weeks.

Miniature Bull Terrier

The bull terrier originated with dogs of various sizes. The miniature bull terrier is basically just a smaller version of the bull terrier. The miniature stands at 10 to 14 inches high, while the bull terrier can grow to 22 inches high. Although smaller than a bull terrier, the miniature is an active dog that does not tolerate the coddling that a miniature poodle can, according to "Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds."

Miniature Pinscher

Although they resemble tiny versions of the Doberman pinscher, the miniature pinscher (Min-Pin for short) is the older of the two breeds. This dog also differs in the way it walks, lifting the forelegs high off the ground. Like the Doberman, the Min Pin also originated in Germany. Miniature pinschers only grow to be 10 to 12 inches tall. Their skeletons are not as strong as a Doberman, so they should not jump off high furniture or play with rough dogs.

Miniature Schnauzer

The schnauzer comes in three sizes: the giant, the standard and the miniature, which is the smallest size at 12 to 14 inches tall. The larger schnauzers were of great help on the farm, but with the Industrial Revolution, Germans could not keep large dogs in apartments. This breed gets along well with children and other animals. This breed sheds less than many other breeds because of its wiry coat, according to "Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds."
