Eliminate Fleas In Dog Pens

Ridding your dog's crates and pens of fleas can be difficult.

Getting rid of fleas in a dog pen can be a truly frustrating experience. Often, flea outbreaks seem to crop up out of nowhere, and treating just the infected area holds no guarantee to eliminate the problem. Whenever you find fleas---either on your dog or in the dog pen---you must be sure to follow a multi-step process to ensure that you eradicate the fleas from your dog, your yard and your pens once and for all.

Instructions

1. Treat any pets that have a remote chance of carrying fleas with an anti-flea shampoo. Do this whether or not you can see adult fleas on them. With one pet in the house or kennel affected, chances are very good there are eggs or larvae on your other animals as well.

2. Wash any blankets, bedding, rugs or other fabrics exposed to infected animals with hot, soapy water and bleach if possible.

3. Vacuum or mop the dog pens, using a bucket of hot water with a capful of bleach. Dispose of any vacuum bags by wrapping them in plastic grocery bags before dumping. Vacuum any fabric or upholstered surfaces you cannot wash.

4. Remove pet toys and dishes from the area you will treat.

5. Apply an insecticide spray labeled for flea control over the entire area, in and around the dog pens, surrounding yard, and house (if the dog pens are at a residential location).

6. Apply an insect growth regulator over the entire area as well. Growth regulators are important to prevent eggs that survive the insecticide treatment from hatching or developing into mature fleas.

7. Continue to watch vigilantly for signs of re-infestation over the next weeks. You may see a few live fleas for up to two weeks. If you continue to see live adult fleas beyond this time, you may need to retreat the dogs and their pens.
