Leave Your Dog In Your Own Home When You Are On A Holiday

Knowing your dog is well cared for will allow you to enjoy your trip.

What to do with your dog when you're away is a dilemma most owners eventually face. Dogs require daily care and social interaction, and miss their human "pack" when left alone. If taking your dog with you is not an option, and boarding your pooch in a kennel is out of the question, you have other options for dog care in your home. Unlike a cat, which is relatively independent, you cannot simply leave your dog with a bowl of food and hope for the best. Make arrangements for your dog to be well cared for while you're gone, and then enjoy your trip -- knowing your canine companion is safe and well.

Instructions

1. Ask a neighbor, friend or family member to come and visit your dog while you are away. Be sure your dog knows the caretaker, and will not become aggressive or frightened when the person enters the dog's territory. Leave clear instructions for daily feeding, treats, clean water, walks or exercise, and any other care your dog requires. Most dogs will require at least two visits per day.

2. Arrange for a house sitter to stay at your home while you are away. Ask friends who have older teenagers if they'd like to make a little extra money staying overnight at your home and caring for your dog. Meet with the house sitter before you leave, introduce her to your dog and carefully cover all necessary daily care.

3. Hire a professional pet sitter to visit your dog and perform daily care. Ask friends or your veterinarian for sitter recommendations. A pet sitter will come to your home to meet you and your dog before you leave, and will carefully record all instructions for pet care. Most professional pet sitters charge per visit, and should spend at least 30 minutes each time feeding your dog, as well as playing, walking and interacting with your pet.
