Water mist is refreshing for both humans and plants.
An outdoor misting system can drop temperatures up to 25 degrees around the misting area, according to MistCooling.com. These Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) systems work great for patios and decks. An outdoor misting system made from PVC pipe is an inexpensive way to fight the heat and it can also be used to water plants. These systems are mounted to a roof or eaves normally 8- to-10 feet from the ground.
Instructions
1. Measure the roof or area where the misting system will be installed. The length of the roof will be the length of PVC pipe you will need. PVC pipe is normally sold in 10 foot sections. If the length measured is longer than 10 feet, a slip-style connector is used to connect the two pipes.
2. Cut the PVC to the measurements you took before and cut a 3-inch long piece with the PVC cutter or box cutter. The 3-inch piece will be used to connect to the hose.
3. Measure and mark the pipes every 7 to 10 inches. This will be the placement of the misters. Most mister packs come in sets of 12. The measurements can be farther apart to cover more area or to provide a lighter mist.
4. Drill a hole into every mark on the pipes. These holes only go through one side of the pipe. A 5/32-inch hole will accommodate most misters; however, you should check to see what size works best.
5. Press a mister into one hole until the first two threads are in and then screw the mister into the hole completely. Insert the rest of the misters in the same manner.
6. Apply a ring of PVC cement or PVC glue around the ends of the PVC pipe. If you are using more than one PVC pipe, slip the slip connector onto one end and slide a glued end of the other pipe into the connector. A slip connector is a PVC pipe connector that slides or slips over the ends of the pipes to connect them. Place the PVC plug on one end of the PVC pipe to cap the end and reduce water loss.
7. Slide the other end of the PVC pipe into the elbow connector. Apply a ring of cement around the outside both ends of the 3-inch PVC pipe and slide it into the open end of the elbow connector. The elbow and all the misters need to point in the same direction.
8. Place the hose connector on the open end of the 3-inch pipe and make sure all connectors are coated with glue. Allow the glue to dry for one hour.
9. Measure and mark the roof every foot. Hold the PVC mister up to the roof and attach it with pipe mounting clamps at the 1-foot marks. All the mister nozzles need to be pointed downward. Have someone hold the PVC to the roof or clamp it to the roof with C-clamps.
10. Screw the water hose into the end of the PVC and turn the water on.
