Breeding yorkies is an entertaining adventure.
Starting a business breeding and selling miniature Yorkies requires time, patience and preparation. If you are prepared to sacrifice time and money, care for the mother during her pregnancy and provide new puppies love and attention, then breeding and selling miniature Yorkies will be a rewarding experience.
Instructions
1. Decide if you want to purchase two miniature Yorkies, a male and a female, or if you want to purchase one female and use a stud service for impregnation. If you purchase two dogs, you will have to separate them during the females first few heat cycles --- she should not be breed until 18 to 24 months of age, as this can cause serious birth defects and complications.
2. Compare the two miniature Yorkies that you want to breed to ensure they have features that are complimentary and will produce puppies that conform to the breed standard.
3. Have your female Yorkie undergo a full physical examination to ensure that she is healthy enough for pregnancy. Put the dogs together during her heat cycle and allow the male to mount her as many times as possible to ensure a pregnancy, which lasts about 63 days.
4. Take your female Yorkie to the veterinarian about four to five weeks after the mating has taken place. Your vet should be able to detect a pregnancy if one is present. If the female is pregnant, be prepared to stay with her a few days before and a few days after the whelping to ensure that the female survives the delivery.
5. Aid the female Yorkie during the delivery to ensure that all of the puppies and the female survive. Administer mouth-to-mouth resuscitation if needed. If the female should die during or after the whelping, consult your vet and feed the puppies with a feeding tube pushed down the throat and into the stomach. Begin bottle-feeding the puppies when they are a few weeks old.
6. Name your Yorkie breeding business. There are many breeders. Your business name should set you apart from others.
7. Create a website that provides information about your business. It should provide information such as the living conditions of the dam and sire, how the dam is cared for during her pregnancy, and how and when the puppies are weaned. Also, provide details such as contact information and a copy of the contract the buyer will be required to sign. State any registrations the puppy will hold.
8. Give the Yorkie puppies the proper vaccinations and have them checked by your veterinarian before they leave for their permanent homes.
9. Create an application for potential buyers to complete and conduct interviews to ensure that the puppy is going to a loving home that can offer it the proper care. Accept non-refundable deposits to hold puppies. Allow the owners to take possession of their puppies when the dogs are three months old.
