Urine not only causes soil to smell, but can damage your lawn.
Whether your dog, a stray or a wild animal urinates on your lawn, that distinct odor is difficult to eradicate, even if it only happens once or twice. While your first instinct may be to act quickly, using harsh cleaning chemicals, this may do more harm than good in the long run. The safe method utilizes baking soda, a common household chemical, or lime, which you can purchase from garden supply stores. Depending on the level of urine saturation, you may need to deodorize multiple times.
Instructions
1. Sprinkle lime or baking soda over the urine-soaked soil and surrounding area. Do not fear being heavy-handed with these substances, because the urine has likely soaked deep into the soil; thus, you will need to saturate it to completely purge any odor.
2. Spray water onto the affected area to soak the baking soda or lime into the soil. Soak the entire area to get the powder deep down to completely neutralize the smell. This will also help spread out the nitrogen in the urine and keep it from burning up your grass.
3. Allow the area to dry completely. You should notice the urine smell has diminished, if not completely disappeared. If the smell persists after the first application, repeat the process until the smell is gone.
