Have a checklist before you go duck hunting.
Any hunting trip worth taking is worth doing right. Having the right supplies and equipment for the hunt will not only make it an enjoyable trip but, hopefully, a successful one as well. Duck hunting is no different, and although the supplies might vary from big-game hunting, the excitement is still the same. To make sure the trip is everything any hunter could hope for, be sure to have the right gear.
Waterfowl Licenses
When gathering gear together be sure not to overlook having a hunting license. Without it, any ducks brought down will be considered illegally gathered. Along with the hunting license, a waterfowl stamp is required. Both of these things can be purchased at any sporting good/outdoors store.
Also, have handy a waterfowl identification book; this is helpful in telling different species of ducks apart, and the hunting regulations for the state/area being hunted. This will provide the hunter with knowledge as to what types of ducks can be taken, when hunting times are and where one can hunt.
Hunting Gear
A few of the essentials for duck hunting include shotgun, ammunition in accordance with the hunt, binoculars, sunglasses or other protective eyewear, ear plugs, knife, a multi-tool such as a Leatherman, first aid kit, game carrier, cleaning kit and a floating gun case.
Calls/Decoys
Duck hunting is all about patience, time, precision and luck. When duck hunting, there are a few accessories to take along besides the hunting supplies.
Decoys are the most common used accessories for hunting ducks. There are field duck decoys, motorized decoys, kite-type decoys and floating decoys. Be sure to take along extra batteries for the motorized decoys. Duck calls are also a good investment to help bring ducks in that are flying by.
Clothes
As with many hunts, duck hunting tends to take place in cooler temperatures. Dressing appropriately will make the hunt more comfortable and enjoyable.
Consider wearing long underwear for the colder days. Because hunting ducks consists of hunting near water and there is a good chance of having to wade in, take along a pair of waders, wader liner pants and a repair kit. Consider a pair of gloves, heavyweight socks and liner socks, a hat made for colder weather and a face mask.
Dog Supplies
Many duck hunters take along a water dog of one breed or another to help retrieve the ducks once they are in the water. Some of the supplies a hunter should provide for their dog/dogs are: a vest, dog first aid kit, electronic training collar and a portable kennel for traveling and to give the dog a safe place to go when not working. Also, consider taking a whistle, dog food and treats and dog dishes so he won’t be forced to eat off the ground.
