Los Angeles has a wonderful nightlife. Some clubs are easy to gain access to, while others--usually those popular among celebrities--are more challenging to try to visit. Here are some tips on get into clubs in the city.

1. Network and make friends in high places. If you know someone famous, now is the time to use this connection and get yourself on any guest lists they may maintain at clubs. Club promoters, celebrities and other VIPs leave club bouncers a list of people they want a club to allow in on their behalf. It can be personal friends of theirs, or it can just be a group of girls they may have hung out with the week before. If you know such a person, contact them and get yourself on their list, and make sure you have their contact information handy when you arrive at the club so that you can call them if you run into any problems.
2. Subscribe to mailing lists of Los Angeles clubs (located on their websites), or get added to MySpace pages of club promoters to get on their Internet or cellphone guestlists or to receive invites to events they may promote. Note that the more coveted night clubs do not use such methods (see Resources below).
3. Dress sexy but tastefully. This means dresses for women and a jacket and collared shirt for men. Owners and managers of the hottest clubs in Los Angeles want attractive people to frequent them. Doll yourself up as best you can without looking too trashy. Look at billboards of models (not underwear models) and try to dress like them.
4. If there is a line, wait patiently. If a club bouncer determines you to be among the "coveted" crowd, he will most likely allow you in quickly. If he does not, take the hint and try your luck elsewhere. Do not arrive drunk and act belligerent. Do not start arguments or engage in verbal or physical violence. Club personnel will not hesitate to retaliate or call the police.
5. Show your ID when asked and bring a lot of cash in case there is a cover charge you can't get out of paying. Women are typically excluded from paying one.
6. Finally, make dinner reservations! You are more likely to be allowed into a club if you have them.
