Sewing Suggestions For Crates For Dogs

Cover an unsightly dog crate with a custom crate cover.

So many people love their dogs, but hate having an unsightly dog crate in the house. One of the easiest ways to conceal a dog crate is to sew a custom crate cover to fit over it. Making a removable cover will allow you to cover the crate when you have company and leave it off when your dog needs to be inside.

Fitted Slip Cover

If you want to cover your dog crate in style, you can sew a custom-fitted slip cover to put on it whenever you have company. Measure all four sides and the top of your crate for your slip cover panels. Add an inch (2.54cm) to each of your measurements to allow for seams. Sew the side panels together with the top panel for a custom-fit slip cover. Just remove the cover when your dog needs to go inside.

Ruffled Glass Table Top Cover

You can actually hide your dog crate in plain sight. Turn your crate into a table by constructing a round pedestal top that sits on top of your dog's crate. Then sew a custom ruffled crate cover to fit over the round pedestal top and drape it to the floor. Top the ruffled cover with a piece of round glass and make it an instant table for when you have guests. Check to make sure your style crate is sturdy enough for this cover before starting your project.

Cushion Top Ottoman

Turn your dog crate into a cushion top ottoman. Cut a piece of plywood equal to the size of the top of your dog crate. Attach a piece of 6-inch (15cm) upholstery foam to the plywood and wrap with fabric stapled to the plywood. Finish the cover up by adding draped material stapled to the bottom side of the plywood base. Don't forget to make sure your style of crate is sturdy enough for this cover before starting your project.

Table Cloth Style

Here's the easiest dog crate cover-up for you to sew. Simply measure the top and sides of the crate to determine the length and width of your cover-up to drape like a table cloth. Use a fabric that matches your room. You can even add a decorative fringe on your cover-up to make it more interesting.

Whenever you want to cover up the crate, toss the cloth over the structure and remove it when the dog needs to be inside.
