Move A Vehicle By Train

Train station

Transporting a car from one part of the country to another can seem like an overwhelming task. Using a train is one transportation option. However, it is a limited option. According to the Vehicle Transport Network, most freight trains do not allow individuals to ship their private vehicles. However, if you want to move a car from the Washington, D.C., area to Florida, you can use Amtrak's Auto Train service.

Instructions

1. Buy a train ticket from Lorton, Virginia, to Sanford, Florida. The Auto Train is not a stand-alone service; you must be a passenger on the train to use it. You need to buy a ticket for yourself and then add on your vehicle fare. You can buy a ticket online or you can call Amtrak directly.

2. Organize your belongings. Amtrak does not offer checked baggage service for the Auto Train. Any items you want to transport with you have to stay stored in your vehicle. However, you are allowed to bring two carry-on items aboard. Decide what items you will leave in your car and what will go on the train with you.

3. Arrive at the train station early. On the day of departure, you need to check in at least an hour before the train is scheduled to leave. If you are transporting an oversize vehicle or a motorcycle then you need to check in at least two hours early. Amtrak begins accepting vehicles at 11:30 a.m. You must arrive before 2 p.m. if you are transporting an oversize vehicle or a motorcycle; 3 p.m. for regular vehicles.

4. Board the train. Once your vehicle is checked in, wait for passenger boarding to begin. It is a 17-hour ride from Virginia to Florida. Dinner and breakfast are included in your train fare.

5. Arrive and continue your journey. Once the train arrives in Florida, you will have to give the team a chance to unload the vehicles. Once your vehicle is unloaded and claimed, you can continue your journey and drive your car to where it needs to be.
