The pet business is a multibillion-dollar industry, the American Pet Products Manufacturing Association claims, and professional dog trainer schools in Missouri will teach you slice a piece out of this industry. Dog trainers are classified under animal care workers by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and jobs are expected to grow by 20 percent through 2018. Trainers are needed to train dogs for all kinds of programs: from assistance dogs for the blind, to law enforcement dogs and those for personal protection, to entertainment, performance and show dogs. Although certification isn't required in Missouri to become a dog trainer, a certificate commands respect from pet owners and can bring in a higher salary.

The Petropolis Academy
The Petropolis Academy helps students to become dog trainers and is certified to operate by the Missouri Coordinating Board of Higher Education. Its education objective is to create an atmosphere of learning that helps people embrace the art and science of professional dog training. Coursework provides a mix of practical experience, business education, lecture and classroom work, and hands-on training, allowing students to develop confidence and skill in the field.
Two courses are offered at different levels and length of training. The Canine Trainer program has 40 classes over an eight-week period and entails 320 contact hours. The Professional Trainer and Behavior Specialist program involves 60 classes and 480 contact hours over 12 weeks. There is financing available, weekday and Saturday classes, and the programs are approved for veterans, those under the Workforce Investment Act and vocational rehabilitation. Animal Behavior College
Envisioned by renowned movie pet trainer Steve Applebaum, the Animal Behavior College (ABC) offers a comprehensive curriculum that encompasses 11 stages. The majority of the program is offered online, and then students are paired with local mentor trainers for the physical parts of the training. The first part of the curriculum can be completed from the privacy of a student's home, while still working a current job.
"Bringing the classroom to your living room," ABC provides a base of theoretical knowledge and academic learning before students observe and participate in professional dog-training sessions.
