Miniature Dachshund
If you're thinking about purchasing a miniature dachshund from a breeder, consider rescuing one instead. This popular breed is known most for its small stature and bold personality. But miniature dachshunds are not for everyone. Their high energy and strong will make a firm and loving owner absolutely necessary.
Instructions
1. Locate a miniature dachshund rescue organization. Find a reputable rescue organization in your local area online at Adopt a Dachshund (see Resources) or contact the Humane Society. The Humane Society will be able to connect you to local dachshund rescue organizations.
2. Fill out the adoption application. Most dachshund rescue organizations require you to fill out an extensive questionnaire. Be prepared to answer questions about your home, family, children, experience with dogs and reasons for adopting. Have a list of personal references as well as veterinarian and dog groomer references. Most rescue organizations require them.
3. Pay the required adoption fee. Many dachshund rescue organizations require you to pay an adoption fee to cover the cost of the dachshund's care while at the rescue organization. This includes the cost of food, relevant supplies, veterinary care, spaying or neutering and micro-chipping. Make an additional donation if you wish to support the work of the rescue group.
4. Make your house safe for your rescued dachshund. You might be adopting an adult dog, but you do not know his history. Puppy-proof your house by moving poisonous plants, insecticides, medicines and cleaning products out of your dog's reach. Ensure that your fence is secure so that you can safely allow your dog into the backyard to eliminate.
5. Know care for a miniature dachshund. Miniature dachshunds make fiercely loyal pets with proper care, attention and training. Learn as much as possible about miniature dachshunds online at Dogster and Dog Breed Info (see Resources) to help you adequately meet his needs.
